Mexico’s new President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has pledged to increase renewable energy production to 45% of the nation’s power by 2030, while continuing support for state-owned energy companies.

In her inaugural address, Sheinbaum outlined a series of goals, including investments in electric vehicle technology, lithium extraction, and state energy companies like Pemex and CFE. The plan emphasizes boosting domestic oil production for internal use and addressing environmental challenges in key cities. “Mexico will seek to strengthen Pemex and CFE as public companies,” said Sheinbaum.

Claudia Sheinbaum, an environmental scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, takes office as Mexico’s 66th president and its first female leader. She is a climate scientist. Sheinbaum has a Ph.D. in energy engineering and, in the early 1990s, studied at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in northern California.

A stronger push toward renewable energy aligns Mexico with global climate goals, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting cleaner energy solutions. Country will focus on oil production for domestic use, not export. Mexico to extract lithium with its own technology. Mexico to address air pollution in 3 largest cities, including Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
